Diverticulitis
Explanation
Diverticulitis is a common bowel disease and is particularly caused in the large intestine. It develops from diverticulosis and involves formation of pouches (diverticula) on outer walls of the colon. Diverticulitis is the condition in which one of these diverticula becomes inflamed.
Reasons/Causes
Abdominal pain is the most common symptom of this disease. Another common sign is tenderness around the left side of the lower abdomen. Presence of infection is indicated by fever, nausea, vomiting, chills, cramping. Patient may also suffer from constipation.
Diverticulitisas per Ayurvedic Concept
Low-fibre and fat-rich diet is the main cause of this disease. Such diet causes aggravation of vata and pitta dosha. Aggravation of vata and pitta dosha causes improper digestion which in turn causes constipation.
Constipation causes strain in muscles because of moving hard stool. This results into increased pressure in the colon. This excess pressure may cause the weak spots in the colon to bulge out and become diverticula.
Diverticulitis occurs when a diverticula gets infected or inflamed.
Lifestyle Guide & Recommended Diet
Diet should include unrefined foods, such as whole grain cereals, bran, honey and lentils. Green, leafy vegetables like lettuce, cabbage, celery, pumpkin and squash are also considered good. Fresh fruits like pears, grapes, figs, papaya, grapefruit, gooseberries and guava are also helpful in this disease. Dry fruits like figs and raisins are also recommended.
List of avoided foods include high fat foods such as butter, cheese, chocolate, cream, ice cream, fatty meat, fried food and gravies as well as carbohydrate-rich foods like bread, candy, cookies, cereal products, potatoes, sugar, high fructose corn syrup and rich puddings. Beverages like fountain drinks and alcoholic drinks should also be avoided.
