Ayurveda science explains flatulence as a resultant of the vitiation of Vata and Pitta doshas. Pitta (means heat or fire) usually controls the digestive system and takes care of jatharagini or the digestive fire. Vata (means air or wind) and this controls the tract and the circulation of body. In case of flatulence, Pitta Dosha and Vata Dosha occur as the increase of pitta and vata results in indigestion and leads to flatulence.
As per Ayurveda, the digestive fire controls the digestion of the food we eat. After digestion, the food gets converted into nutrient plasma by a natural mechanism. Thus, this plasma is a nutrient and nourishes our body tissues. In case of improper digestion, dangerous toxins or ama is produced instead of the necessary nutrients. The toxins, thus forms a coating in the digestive system and this leads to forming of Vata Doshas. Thus, due to Vata doshas and impaired digestion, flatulence thus occurs.
