Cataract
Explanation
Cataract is most commonly found among aged people and often considered to occur because of the aging process. When the clear lens of the eye gets cloudy which blurs your vision, such a condition of your eye is termed as Cataract. Generally the power of eye lens rises during the growth of old age cataract which causes myopia (near-sightedness). If Cataracts are not treated at the right time then it may cause loss of vision and in some cases potential blindness. Though the condition occurs in both eyes, it is often found that one eye is affected before the other.
Reasons/Causes
Our eye lens are made up of water and proteins. The protein helps in keeping the lens clean in order to let the light flow to generate a clear vision on the surface of retina. With age, these proteins often bind with each other and form a cloud around the lens area. Hence, it causes age-related cataract. If not treated soon the cataract grows denser and cloud the lens in a way that can lead to blindness. Please note that, Cataract shouldn’t be mistaken as tumour or growth.
In addition to age-related cataracts, there are many cases of secondary cataracts which are not age-related. Same as the age-related cataract, secondary cataracts also occur due to clouding of proteins around the lens area which is generally as a result of an eye injury, eye surgery or exposure to ultraviolet and infrared radiations or ionizing.
