Shoulder Replacement
What is Shoulder Replacement?
This generally involves replacement of the shoulder joint that is damaged as a result of an accident or disorder.
Why it is done?
Primary focus of this replacement is to provide relief from the pain and help the patients with natural shoulder movement and functionality. It is done to treat disorders as:
How it is done?
The normal replacement, replaces the arthritic surface joint, with a polished metal ball attaching it to a plastic socket on metal stem. The module varies in size, and if the condition of the bone is good, surgeon might apply cement-less humeral module. In case of subtle bone condition cemented humeral module will be applied. If affected by bone arthritis an intact rotator cuff tendon are best means of shoulder replacement.
Shoulder immobilizer is placed is placed for period between 3 weeks. After the immobilizer is removed the patients are asked to do simple exercises like brushing and feeding. First 3 weeks they require simple exercises to improve motion. Therapies continue to strengthen the muscles.

Risk of Shoulder Replacement Surgery includes:
- Blood Clots: Usually occurs among the elderly people in their leg vein, might be experienced by obese individuals.
- Infection in the Surgical Wound or in the Joint: people having health problems like diabetes, liver disorders are more prone to infections.
- Nerve Injury: rarely seen, but can occur at the time of surgery. Mostly occurs during deformity corrections.
- Lack of Range of Motion: natural motion might be possible even after the surgery. For this certain medications are required to relax the muscles and force the area to motion.
- Dislocation of the Humerus: happens if the soft tissue gets stretched extensively, can be prevented by reducing stretching the shoulder.
- Fracture of the Humerus: This is a normal complication, may occur either during or after surgery.
