Jaundice
Explanation
Jaundice is yellowing of the skin and the mucous membranes resulting from excessive contamination of bile pigments in the blood tissue. The amount or the rate of accumulation increases due to several liver diseases or hepatitis.
Reasons/Causes
Bilirubin is a waste product which is formed when the red blood cells break in their 120 day cycle and this bilirubin is taken out of the body through faeces and urine. Infections and damage to their system might cause in jaundice. If the liver produces less amount of bilirubin it leads to intra-hepatic jaundice. Consumption of high fat diet which may lead to high cholesterol levels can increase the risk of gallbladder stones leading to jaundice.
Signs/Symptoms
Symptoms of this disease vary according to the cause of it like virus, bacteria or toxins. It results in mild fever, tired or ill feeling, loss of appetite, vomiting and muscle cramps. Liver inflammation takes place and there is a yellow tint is added to the skin and whites of the eyes. Bad breath and a prolonged bitter taste may develop. Slight discoloration in the stools is seen.

Lifestyle Guide & Recommended Diet
- Practise juice diet and oranges, lemons, sugarcanes and carrots are most suited.
- Avoid any kind of digestive disturbances and stress.
- Moderate amount of exercise is advisable with plenty of rest.
- One glass of hot skimmed milk with honey.
- Vegetables such as spinach, fenugreek and carrots are advisable.
- Fats in the form of ghee, butter, cheese and oily foods should be avoided.
- Barley water is a good remedy to cure jaundice.
Homemade Therapies
- In one glass of water, add 2 table spoon of turmeric powder and drink the mixture minimumthree times in a day.
- Take 7 almonds, 2 dried dates, 3 cardamoms and soak them overnight and crush them the next morning to make a paste add 2 table spoon of sugar and 1 table spoon of butter to the mixture and mix it properly. Eat this once a day.
- Boil 4-5 tomatoes in 500ml of water for around 15 minutes. Remove the skin and crush the tomatoes to extract their juice. The juice is very effective if consumed in empty stomach.
- Sugarcane juice mixed with lime juice consumed two times in a day to speed up the recovery.
