Sinusitis
Explanation
When the sinus glands or the Pinas as they are called in Ayurveda are inflamed due to a blockage, Sinusitis is caused. People of all ages can get sinusitis and especially those who have a tendency for catching viral cold and flu can definitely catch sinusitis.
Reasons/Causes
It has been seen that people who have an urge to following a very irregular food and sleeping habits usually cause severe damage to the three Doshas. Kapha (or Water), gets collected in the sinus and prevents the passage of Vata (or Air). Further, to add on to the condition, Pitta (or Fire) adds inflammation to the glands causing irritation and agony. Exposure to extreme sunlight or cold weather, restricting urges of tears and vomiting can also sum up to be other causes for sinusitis.
Signs/Symptoms
It has been seen that people from Sinusitis have stuffy or running noses, heaviness in the head and persistent headaches. Among the other symptoms, patients suffering from chronic sinusitis have thick yellow mucus secretion and those suffering from acute condition, may have thin watery secretion. Smelling power gets affected and constant coughs are other symptoms of Sinusitis.
Sinusitis as per Ayurvedic Concept
From Ayurvedic point of medication, the main work is of removing and clearing the nasal mucus through a liquefying process by herbal means. These can be done by nasal therapies for some time. Panchakarma treatment specifically the Nasya-based ones have been found as effective remedial.

Lifestyle Guide & Recommended Diet
- Have a healthy diet of fresh fruits and vegetables, more specifically those which can be digested easily
- Drink only warm water either plain or after adding either cinnamon or black pepper to it.
- Include ginger and garlic in your daily meal
- Stay away from cold foods, cold drinks and ice creams or anything that can cause colds
- Sleep on one side with a high pillow under your head so that no mucus accumulates and so that you can have no problem with breathing.
Homemade Therapies
- To reduce the swelling of sinus glands, it is recommended to inhale in steam of a special concoction. To make the preparation, first take 10-12 mint leaves that have to be crushed, one or two liters of water that have to be heated to boil. Further adding, a few drops of clove oil or simply dropping in a spoon of cloves, and 1 or two drops of eucalyptus oil or even 1/3 cup of eucalyptus leaves to the heating water. The hot steam should be inhaled daily for 15 minutes at least two times a day till the blockage in the sinus glands get cleared. Further to that, you can do the same process once a week for the remaining phlegm to get cleared. Incase the ingredients are not immediately available, one can even do the steam inhaling with plain hot water.
- Fresh ginger juice should be had with one teaspoon of honey twice every day.
- Take half teaspoon of mustard seeds and add them to one cup of water. Boil the water till the quantity is halved and then with the help of a dropper, this essence should be dropped after it is cooled.
